We knew it as Acorn Park, but it’s Acorn Park no more. Renamed Discovery Park, the former Cambridge, US home of Arthur D. Little, Inc., is undergoing major changes.

Last July, the current owners of the property, Bulfinch Companies, Inc., announced plans to demolish two parking lots and seven of the 20 buildings on the 26.5 acre campus, and to build a new research facility. Bulfinch expects to replace the 416,000 square feet of lab and office space with an 826,000 square foot research park. The original three-story buildings will be replaced by six-story buildings, and 2.6 acres of now-developed space will be returned to a natural state.

Demolition and construction have begun, and the project’s first phase is slated for completion in December 2005. The anticipated anchor tenant is the Smithsonian Institution Astrophysical Observatory, a member of the Harvard-Smithsonian Center for Astrophysics.
